Introducing a Metaintegrative Vision of Nonduality
What if nonduality has more than one face? How might the realization of pure consciousness, intimate divine communion, sacred community, and the creativity of the Kosmos belong together? And what becomes possible when we learn to recognize these different expressions of nondual realization in our own lives?
In this fourth installment of Varieties of Nonduality series, I will introduce my new integrative metatheory of nonduality. The first three courses explored contemplative traditions across East and West. This course brings the insights of that comparative inquiry into a new framework for understanding the relationships among different nondual realizations, practices, and traditions.
Across ten weeks, we will work through the central dimensions of the “Nondual Polarity Model” I’ve been developing, combining related layers into a coherent journey. The 35+ nondual traditions we have explored over the last 3 years in will remain important conversation partners as we explore the larger patterns they reveal together. My aim is to honor their distinctive insights while opening up new possibilities for contemplative inquiry and integral realization.
This course stands on its own. You do not need to have taken any of the previous Varieties of Nonduality courses. Returning participants will find a new synthesis that builds on our earlier explorations.

Four Faces of Nondual Realization
At the heart of the model are two intersecting nondual axes: an ontological axis of transcendence and immanence, and a relational axis of identity and communion. Together, they help illuminate four complementary nondual ultimates:
- Oneness — Divine Consciousness: nondual realization through consciousness and being.
- Thouness — Divine Communion: nondual realization through the intimacy of relationship.
- Kinness — Divine Community: nondual realization through participation, interdependence, and belonging.
- Allness — Divine Creativity: nondual realization through the dynamic creativity of the Kosmos.
We will explore how these four ultimates arise within the One–Many Creatrix, the generative nondual relationality in which unity and multiplicity are co-primordial and mutually implicating. This approach invites us to consider difference, relationship, and becoming as integral dimensions of nonduality.

Our Ten Week Journey
1Â Introduction and setting the stage
How the model emerged from comparative inquiry, why an integrative metatheory is useful, and how its multiple layers and many polarities fit together. We will establish a shared vocabulary and orient to the questions guiding the course.
2 The One–Many Creatrix and the Primordial One–Many Polarity
Explore the generative relationship of unity and multiplicity, being and becoming. What changes when the One and the Many are understood as co-primordial dimensions of reality?
3Â The Two Nondual Axes and the Four Nondual Ultimates
Discover how transcendence–immanence and identity–communion illuminate Oneness, Thouness, Kinness, and Allness. Consider what each ultimate discloses and how they relate.
4Â The Pure Event Layer
Explore pure consciousness, communion, community, and creativity events as distinctive experiential and phenomenological expressions of the Four Ultimates. Consider how direct experience relates to the language we use to interpret it.
5Â The Cosmological Arcs
Examine the model’s arcs of involution and evolution and the relationships among manifestation, development, and integration. Explore how the four ultimates participate in these larger movements.
6 Subject–Object Strategies of Each Ultimate
Investigate different ways that the apparent separation of subject and object can be transformed. Explore how these strategies express the distinctive orientations of the four ultimates.
7Â The Meta Path and Meta Attention Polarities
Explore how paths of realization and modes of attention shape contemplative experience. Bring these polarities into conversation with the model’s enactment matrix and realizer archetypes.
8Â Sacred and Divine Polarities
Investigate the sacred and divine polarities associated with the four ultimates, including awareness–being, lover–beloved, community–ecology, and Shiva–Shakti. Explore their significance for practice and everyday life.
9Â Tradition Tensions and Cultural Historical Polarities
Examine how traditions work with enduring tensions such as silence–expression, withdrawal–engagement, and sudden–gradual realization. Consider cultural and historical influences and comparative patterns across traditions.
10Â The Whole Model and Integral Fourfold Realization
Bring the layers together, revisit the central questions, and explore integral fourfold realization. Reflect on how the model can inform your ongoing practice, relationships, and understanding of reality.

What You’ll Experience
This course is going to be another amazing metaintegral exploration of the robust and diverse contemplative traditions of nonduality found around our planet. In this time of global metacrisis we are well served to deepen our connection to these nondual traditions and the pristine wisdom they have to offer us in such times of need.Â
- Comparative insight: Understand how “nondual awareness” is framed across radically different worldviews.
- Experiential depth:Â Each week includes optional readings, a recorded talk (30-60 min), meditative reflections, a discussion forum, and live discussion.
- Integrative perspective:Â See how ancient wisdom and modern consciousness studies converge on the same luminous ground.
- Scholarly yet accessible:Â Perfect for spiritual seekers, philosophers, therapists, and anyone fascinated by the nature of reality.

Facilitator & Lecturer
SEAN ESBJöRN-HARGENS PH.D.
Sean Esbjörn-Hargens Ph.D. has been a global leader of the application of integrative metatheories for over two decades. Through his numerous activities, projects, and writings, he has made notable contributions to developing “metaintegral” approaches to the fields of education, ecology, mixed-methods research, psychology & consciousness studies, philosophy of science, anomalous studies, organizational development, and post-capital models of measuring social impact.
For the last seven years, he has been developing the new field of Exo Studies – exploring the implications of anomalous realities and experiences for our understanding the nature of reality. Sean is very passionate about developing new metaviews of what it means to be living in a multidimensional multiverse. His most recent Exo Studies article is a 50-page piece entitled Our Wild Komos where he explores the topic of the ontological status of Non-human Intelligences (NHI).
He has also authored or edited nine books on integral theory and its applications and is currently co-editing an anthology on integrative metatheory and writing his first book on Exo Studies. Currently, he is the Dean of Integral Education at the California Institute for Human Sciences (CIHS). Also, at CIHS he is the Program Director of the online MA/PHD program in Integral Noetic Sciences (INS), which takes an integrative metatheoretical approach to the scientific study of consciousness with a focus on noetic and anomalous experiences. At CIHS he also runs the Center for Anomalous and Noetic Studies and the Center for Applied Integrative Metatheory. The INS program has a focus on subtle energy and biofield research. It is also the only accredited program on Earth that offers a concentration in Anomalous Studies and one in UAP and Consciousness Studies.
In partnership with CIHS, Last year he launched a new global research project on Super Experiencers exploring the multiple types of anomalous and noetic experiences people have. This project includes a survey, in-depth interviews, and brain imaging of Super Experiencers. Sean has also had his fair share of wild and weird first-person "exo" experiences, which makes this exploration personally salient and meaningful.
Sean has been a long-time serious meditator and practitioner within a number of contemplative, subtle energy, magic-based, and nondual traditions including: Tibetan Buddhism, The Russian Orthodox Church (Christianity), A. H. Almaas’ The Diamond Approach, The Ceile De Celtic tradition, Theosophy and the Hermetic tradition.
